Billy Markus Net Worth – $1 million

What is Billy Markus’ net worth? How rich is the Dogecoin creator?

Introduction

Billy Markus is an American programmer, engineer, and entrepreneur, best known for co-founding the meme coin Dogecoin.

Contrary to Markus’ vocal lifestyle and the invention of a multi-billion dollar cryptocurrency, information about him and his life is generally unknown.

Markus dropped out of the Dogecoin project a few years ago, leaving his impression on its community through his continuing usage of his Twitter account, @BillyM2k.

Markus has led a relatively quiet life, from his original employment at IBM to his rumored current reemployment, excluding his social media impressions.

So, let us look at the true Dogefather, also known as Shibetoshi Nakamoto: Billy Markus.

The Origin Story

Billy Markus was likely born in Oregon, USA, during the late 80s or early 90s.

His exact birth date and location are entirely unknown, although estimates have him born around this general time.

Nonetheless, Markus has had an interest in computers from a young age, likely growing up on some of the earlier brands that exist today.

Again, there is not too much information about the Dogecoin creator, although interviews piece together minor aspects of his early life.

According to Markus, he and Dogecoin co-founder Jackson Palmer were friends from a young age, both riding on the leading edge of technology.

With that connection, the two eventually connected and created Dogecoin in 2013.

Even without much information about Billy Markus, we know he has been a significant advocate and adopter of technology for nearly as long as the inventor has lived.

Career

According to Markus’ Linkedin page, he was employed at “Puppy Training School” for 13 years, from 2000 to 2013.

The same listing describes this time as “Good Boi Degree – Sitting, fetching, rolling over.”

IBM Software Engineer

While it is unclear what Markus means by that experience, it is likely an analogy to his time at IBM as a software engineer.

As the timing coincides with Markus’ launch of Dogecoin and his relevant career as a software engineer, it likely means the experience from his IBM job led to the creation of Dogecoin.

Markus has not seemed to care too fondly of his IBM career, having focused on side projects such as Bells, his first cryptocurrency.

Bells, named from the Animal Crossing video game series, was Markus’ first entry into the cryptocurrency industry. However, in multiple interviews, Markus reveals that Bells was not too successful, leading him to use it as a basis for a Dogecoin mockup.

Around this time, Markus’ friend Jackson Palmer had created a meme-inspired Doge photo.

While playing around with Bells, Markus used the image as Bells’ primary photo, adding Comic Sans font.

Like that, Dogecoin was born.

Markus immediately called Palmer, talking to him about using Dogecoin as a meme-inspired peer-to-peer Bitcoin alternative.

With Dogecoin designed around community and jokes, the duo thought it would be perfect against the backdrop of cryptocurrencies’ sketchy appearance.

Palmer purchased the domain Dogecoin.com, added the coin’s logo and random Comic Sans font, then turning the work over to Markus to build the coin’s actual functions.

Markus used Luckycoin and Litecoin as a framework for Dogecoin, utilizing his experience as a software engineer.

Not too soon afterward, the duo launched Dogecoin, and Markus retired from IBM.

Dogecoin

In June 2014, just seven months after the launch of Dogecoin, Markus moved his focus to his social media and cryptocurrency.

While Markus’ Twitter account has been active since 2009, he went full-time as an influencer in 2014.

Markus’ social media campaigning coincided with Dogecoin’s sudden pop in popularity, as the memecoin’s volume had briefly surpassed all the other cryptocurrencies’ volume combined.

However, following a 2014 update, Markus retired from the Dogecoin project alongside co-partner Jackson Palmer. ”The crypto community can be pretty elitist and not very inclusive,” Markus told CNBC.

Becoming an Influencer + Rejoining The Dogecoin Foundation

Now separated from Dogecoin, Markus entirely focused on social media.

He had sold the majority, if not all, of his Dogecoin holdings, separating himself from the project.

Even still, Markus has gradually re-attached his career directly to Dogecoin.

While some rumor that Markus had returned to IBM to continue his work as a software engineer, his Linkedin and social media says otherwise.

Speaking of which, Markus moved his Twitter account and social media campaigns towards Dogecoin, where it now sits.

Likewise, he rejoined The Dogecoin Foundation, the nonprofit which had dissolved in 2014.

Markus had rejoined and helped settle the Foundation just August 18th, 2021: a full seven years following his departure from the same Foundation.

Billy Markus now serves as a board member on The Dogecoin Foundation, running his Twitter account, which had grown to over 500 thousand followers by early-to-mid 2021.

Billy Markus – Net Worth

So, how much is Billy Markus worth?

As one of the creators of Dogecoin, it is rumored that he owns several billion Dogecoin. With over 129 billion Dogecoin, Markus could own one percent of the project and hold various amounts.

”I don’t currently own any Dogecoin except what has been tipped to me recently,” he wrote in February 2021 on Reddit. He also wrote: ”I’m not rich.”

Markus’ tip for investing is “Buy low, sell high.”

Therefore, Billy Markus has an estimated net worth of $1 million.
