The Porsche Tennis Grand Prix, also known as the WTA Stuttgart Open 2022, resumes activity on the WTA tour after a week off. From April 18 to 24, the WTA 500 competition will be staged for the 44th time.
The event has traditionally had a strong field, with prominent players making it a point to participate in the German capital. This time is no exception, with seven players from the top ten expected to compete. As the top seed, world No. 1 Iga Swiatek leads the field. Jelena Ostapenko, Barbora Krejcikova and Danielle Collins were also scheduled to compete but pulled out. The reigning winner in singles and doubles was Ashleigh Barty, who retired from tennis earlier this year.
The Stuttgart Open is one of the WTA’s oldest events. The first event took place in 1978. It is the only clay tournament held indoors and is rated as a WTA 500 event. Until 2008, the event was hosted on an indoor hardcourt at the end of the season and was played on an indoor hardcourt. The tournament has been conducted in April as a warm-up event for Roland Garros since 2009.
The event was hosted in Filderstadt from its establishment in 1978 through 2005. The competition has been held in Stuttgart, Germany, since 2006. Many well-known players have won the Stuttgart Open, including Martina Navratilova, Tracy Austin, Maria Sharapova and Lindsay Davenport. The event will take place indoors on red clay at the Porsche Arena in Stuttgart, Germany.
